Nurse
Our school nurse performs a variety of duties at Jefferson to keep our students healthy and safe. She provides direct student care - assessing student health needs, conducts mandatory health screenings, oversees maintenance of student health and immunization records, administers medication, provides emergency first aid to students and staff and works with the Department of Health in the control of communicable diseases.
We ask that you keep your student's health and emergency information updated with current names and telephone numbers by contacting Mrs. McCann at 636-443-4403. Student Health Information is updated yearly. Please keep your school nurse updated on your child's health status, such as surgeries, medications, illnesses/diseases, new diagnoses, or other conditions that may affect your child's school performance.
The St. Charles Health Department offers an Immunization Clinic to all residents.
Administering Medications
If your child requires medication taken during the school day, it will be administered according to district policy. A completed medication form is required for each medication brought to school.
District Policy:
The giving of medicine by the nurse, principal, or designee shall be restricted to that which is necessary and cannot be given on an alternative schedule.
Prescription medicines will be in the original pharmacy/prescriber labeled container showing:
- student's name
- name of the medicine
- dosage and administration schedule
- prescriber's name
- date purchased
The student's authorized prescriber must be a medical professional with prescriptive authority such as a physician, dentist, orthodontist, etc. The district will not administer the first dose of an initial prescription.
Illnesses at School
Students running a fever of 100 degrees or above should not be sent to school in the morning. If your child begins to run a fever during the school day, arrangements will be made for the child to be picked up from school by a parent or emergency contact. Students need to be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to school.
Special Health Concerns
Students with special health concerns (asthma, seizure disorder, diabetes, severe food allergies, etc.) must have an emergency action plan on file every school year. This information is crucial to keep your child safe during the school day. Please print the appropriate form from the district's clinic website and take it to your child's doctor. Return the form to school promptly with the required emergency medication and medication forms.
Immunizations
MO State Statute 167.181 states that “It is unlawful for any student to attend school unless he has been immunized as required under the rules and regulations of the department of health and senior services, and can provide satisfactory evidence of such immunization.” Only a medical exemption signed by an M.D., a D.O., or religious exemption will be accepted in lieu of an updated immunization. Students without proper immunizations and/or proof of the same will NOT be allowed to attend school and/or obtain a schedule of classes.
